About Margin & Muse

Margin & Muse picks books as gifts. Not the best books ever written, not the books a jury admired this year — the book that suits the specific person you are buying for, which is a different and much more answerable question.

The site is organized around that. The primary axis is who you are buying for and what the occasion is, because that is the order people actually shop in. Genre is the second axis, format is the third, and the reading lists sit underneath as a reference rather than as the front door.

There are just under a hundred pages here at launch, covering gift guides by recipient, occasion and budget; nine genres with an entry point for each; year and all-time reading lists; and honest explainers on Audible, Kindle Unlimited and the format questions people search before they commit money to a subscription.

The best-resourced gift guides in this category have quietly given up on books. They are heavily weighted toward merchandise — candles, mugs, reading lights — on a stated principle: that the best gift for a book lover is almost never a book, because taste is too personal.

We take the opposite position deliberately. Taste being personal is exactly why the match matters, and matching is a job you can do if you know two things about the person: how much they read, and what they last finished. So we recommend the actual book, and we say who it is for before we say anything else.

We do still cover the accessories, because the intent is real and sometimes a book genuinely is the wrong answer. But it lives in its own lane rather than diluting every book list on the site.

We have not read every book on this site, and we are not going to say we have. There are close to three hundred books in the registry here; a claim to have read all of them cover to cover would be a lie that anyone could reasonably suspect and nobody could check.

So here is the honest accounting of what stands behind a recommendation:

• Books we claim to have read before recommending: we do not make that claim.
• Sponsored placements: none, ever. No publisher has paid for a place on any list.
• Free review copies accepted: none.
• Ratings or star scores we have assigned: none. We publish no scores and emit no rating markup, because a score implies a measurement we have not made.

What we do instead is check what is checkable — publication year, print length, format availability, the publisher's own description — and then make an editorial judgment about who each book suits. That judgment is arguable, which is the point. The method is published in full.

One person: Sawyer V., an enthusiast rather than an expert. No literary credential, no publishing background, no editorial board behind the byline. Compiling published data and applying a stated method carefully is a real skill and it is not the same thing as expertise, and we would rather be precise about which one is on offer here.
