Book Gifts Under $25
The hardcover tier — where the object starts doing some of the work.
Updated September 2026 · By Sawyer V.

The short version
This is where a new hardcover becomes possible, and a hardcover is the standard gift for a close friend or family member. Spend it on something recent: the object and the currency are what the extra ten dollars buys.
Some links on this page are affiliate links. If you buy through one we earn a commission at no extra cost to you, and it does not change which books are here or the order they appear in. Read the full disclosure.
How we picked
This tier usually buys a new or recent hardcover, so we chose books where the physical object is worth having and where being current matters. Prices move with edition and retailer, so we link the live listing instead of printing a number. We have not read all eight.
What we do on every list: read the publisher’s own description rather than a summary of it, check print length and first publication year against library catalog data (last refreshed September 8, 2026), confirm the book is still sold in the format we suggest, and write the match line before the blurb. What we do not do is claim to have read every book here cover to cover. The full method is published, and it is written so anyone can check it.

#ad — buying through these links earns us a commission at no cost to you. No price is printed because we do not run a live price feed, and a remembered number would be a guess.
Eight books worth a hardcover

1. The one to give a serious reader
James
Percival Everett
Give this ifthey read literary fiction and follow what wins prizes
Huckleberry Finn retold by Jim, who has been carefully managing how he speaks the entire time. It is a formal trick that turns into something furious and propulsive, and it is the rare prize-winning novel that is also a genuinely fast read.

2. Big-hearted and widely loved
The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store
James McBride
Give this ifthey want a full world with a lot of people in it
A skeleton found in a Pennsylvania well opens onto a 1930s neighborhood of Jewish and Black families who look after each other. It is crowded, funny and generous, and it is the book on this list most likely to be passed around a family.

3. The reliable crowd-pleaser
The Women
Kristin Hannah
Give this ifthey liked The Nightingale, or read a lot of historical fiction
A nurse volunteers for Vietnam and comes home to a country that will not admit women were there. It is unashamedly emotional and extremely well constructed, and it is the safest hardcover on this list for a reader over fifty.
- Print length
- 480 pages

- 2024
- Formats
- print, Kindle and audio where the publisher offers them

4. Literary horror
The Bewitching
Silvia Moreno-Garcia
Give this ifthey like being unsettled but not disgusted
Three timelines braided around witchcraft and a graduate thesis. It is atmospheric rather than gory, which makes it the right horror gift for someone who liked Mexican Gothic and does not want a slasher.
- Print length
- 360 pages

- 2025

5. Big commercial fiction, done well
Atmosphere
Taylor Jenkins Reid
Give this ifthey read fast, love a good story, and are not snobbish about it
A woman is selected for NASA's 1980s astronaut program. It is proper page-turning commercial fiction from a writer who takes structure seriously, which is a much rarer combination than the shelf suggests.

6. Short, beautiful, prize-winning
Orbital
Samantha Harvey
Give this ifyou want to give something small that still feels significant
One day aboard the International Space Station, sixteen sunrises long. It is barely 140 pages, so a hardback of it is affordable, physically lovely, and reads in an evening. Excellent value at this tier.
One caveat: There is almost no plot. A reader who needs a story will be lost at sea, appropriately enough.

7. Historical mystery
The Frozen River
Ariel Lawhon
Give this ifthey want a plot and a period at the same time
A midwife in 1789 Maine keeps a diary, and a body comes out of the ice. It satisfies both the mystery reader and the historical fiction reader, which makes it a good bet when a household contains one of each.
- Print length

8. Nonfiction that changes how you look at things
An Immense World
Ed Yong
Give this ifthey have a dog, keep birds, or ask a lot of questions
How other animals sense the world — electric fields, echoes, magnetic north — and what our own senses leave out. It is the nonfiction gift people most often report having read out loud to somebody else in the room.

What $25 buys, and when to spend it
This is the standard gift band for a close friend, a sibling or a partner's parent. It buys a new hardcover, which is a real object: it holds a signature on the title page, it survives being lent out, and it is visibly not a paperback grabbed at a station.
Two ways to spend it well. Buy recent — a book from this year or last says you were paying attention, which a classic cannot. Or buy short and beautiful: a slim prize-winning hardback at 140 pages costs about the same as a fat one and feels far more like a chosen object than a delivered quantity.
If the occasion is bigger than a birthday — a wedding, a fiftieth, a retirement — the splurge list covers signed editions and specially bound books, where the object is the whole point.
Matching the hardcover to the reader
| Reader | Pick from this list | Because |
|---|---|---|
| Literary, follows prizes | James, Orbital | Both recent, both decorated, neither difficult |
| Reads a lot of historical fiction | The Women, The Frozen River | Strong plot, well-realized period, no homework |
| Reads on the commute | Atmosphere | Momentum from page one and chapters that break cleanly |
| Reads nonfiction only | An Immense World | Curiosity-driven rather than argumentative |
| Likes to be unsettled | The Bewitching | Atmospheric horror, no gore |
| Has very little time | Orbital | 140 pages, and finishing it feels like an achievement |
What we would skip
A boxed set of a series they have not started
It looks generous and lands as an obligation. A boxed set says: here are four thousand pages, please begin. If they have already read book one and loved it, a set is a wonderful gift. If they have not, buy one volume and let them decide.
Questions people ask
Is $25 a good amount to spend on a book gift?
It is the standard band for a friend or family member, and it covers a new hardcover. Below it you are in paperbacks; above it you are buying signed or specially bound editions, which is milestone territory.
Hardcover or paperback for a birthday?
Hardcover. A birthday gift is partly an object, and a hardback holds an inscription, survives lending, and does not look like something bought at a station.
What is the best-value hardcover gift?
A short prize-winning book. A 140-page hardback costs roughly what a 500-page one does, and it reads as a chosen object rather than a delivered quantity. Orbital is the clearest example on this list.
Should I buy this year's biggest novel?
For an occasional reader, yes — they will not have it. For someone who reads constantly, the year's biggest novel is the single most likely book to already be on their shelf, so go one layer down into a genre list.
