The books that are better listened to than read — and the honest version of how Audible works.

The short version

Give an audiobook when the person has time but not hands — commuting, walking, cooking, driving. A memoir read by its author or a full-cast production is the format at its best. If you are buying for a regular listener, a membership beats a single title.

When an audiobook is the better object

Audio is not a lesser version of a book, it is a different one, and there are books that are straightforwardly better in it. Three categories dominate.

  1. Memoir read by its author. The person telling you their own story with their own timing is doing something the page cannot. This is why author-narrated memoir is the most reliable audiobook gift there is.
  2. Full-cast productions. A novel written as interviews, letters or transcripts turns into something close to radio drama when each voice is a different actor. It is a genuinely different experience from reading the same text.
  3. Comic and conversational writing. Timing is most of comedy, and a good narrator has it. Essays and humor reliably land harder aloud.

The reverse is also true, and worth saying: audio is a poor fit for books you need to flip back through, books with maps, diagrams or footnotes doing real work, and dense nonfiction you are trying to retain rather than enjoy. If your person is studying something, print serves them better.

How to actually give an audiobook

There are three ways, and they suit different people.

For most people the membership is the better gift, because the hard part of audiobooks is not the first book, it is building the habit — and a membership is three or four months of habit rather than one title. We list print length, not runtime, and here is why

Every book on this site shows its median print length, taken from library catalog data. You will notice we do not print audiobook runtimes anywhere, which for an audiobook section looks like an odd omission. It is deliberate.

A runtime is a property of one specific recording, not of the book. The same title can exist as a 9-hour recording by one narrator and an 11-hour recording by another, plus an abridged edition at half that. Publishing a single number would mean either checking every edition on every listing every month, or printing a figure that is wrong for whichever recording you actually buy.

So we give you the print length, which is stable and comparable, and link straight to the listing where the runtime for the specific recording is displayed by the retailer who is selling it. If you want short, audiobooks under six hours is the list built for that.

Questions people ask

Does listening to an audiobook count as reading?

For enjoying a story, the research on comprehension finds the two closely comparable. For studying material you need to retain and search, print has real advantages. We go through the evidence on audiobooks versus reading.

Is Audible worth it as a gift?

For someone who commutes, walks, drives or works with their hands, usually yes — a membership buys months of habit rather than one title. For someone who reads in bed in silence, buy them the hardcover instead. Our Audible explainer covers the plans.

Why do you not list audiobook runtimes?

Because a runtime belongs to one recording, not to the book: narrators, editions and abridgements all differ. We publish print length, which is stable, and link to the listing where the runtime for the actual recording is shown.

Can I listen to audiobooks for free?

Yes. Most US public libraries lend audiobooks through Libby with a library card, at no cost. It is a genuinely good service and we say so even though we earn nothing from it.

What makes a good audiobook narrator?

Restraint, mostly. The best narrators do character work without performing it, and keep a pace you can follow at 1.5x. Author-narrated memoir and full-cast productions are the two categories where the audio version reliably beats the page.
