2025 has a full year of shelving data behind it, which makes this list considerably more reliable than any current-year ranking. The books below are the ones the largest number of catalog users actually put on a shelf.

How we picked
We queried the Open Library search API for books first published in 2025, sorted by reading-log count, and hand-edited out textbooks, workbooks, duplicate editions and titles not sold in English. A complete year means the ranking has settled rather than reflecting publication timing. We have not read all of these.
What we do on every list: read the publisher’s own description rather than a summary of it, check print length and first publication year against library catalog data (last refreshed September 8, 2026), confirm the book is still sold in the format we suggest, and write the match line before the blurb. What we do not do is claim to have read every book here cover to cover. The full method is published, and it is written so anyone can check it.

Why a completed year is more reliable
A current-year list is distorted by publication timing: a January release has had eleven months to find readers and a November release has had none. After a full year that distortion mostly washes out, and the ranking starts to reflect what people actually read rather than when it appeared.
That is why this page is longer and more confident than the 2026 list, and why we would point a gift buyer here first for anyone who does not read constantly.
This page is an archive, and stays one
When 2027 arrives, this list will not be deleted, redirected or quietly rewritten into something else. It keeps its URL, gains a dated stamp, and links forward to the current year.
The reason is simple: a year list is a record of what those twelve months produced, and people look them up for years afterwards. Overwriting an archive to keep a URL fresh is a search-engine tactic that treats the reader as an afterthought, and we would rather have the archive.
What 2025 looked like as a year
Two patterns are clear in a full year of data. Series fiction dominated the top — romantasy and domestic thriller between them account for most of the highest-shelved titles. And the single biggest general release was a prequel to a young-adult series first published in 2008, which says something about how durable that audience has proved.
Nonfiction was led by an insider account of a technology company rather than by history or science, which has been the pattern for several years now. Our nonfiction page sorts that shelf by mode rather than by subject.

Assuming a heavy reader has not read these
This is the risk with a completed-year list. A book that spent 2025 near the top of every shelving measure is exactly the book a keen reader already owns, and it is the single most common way a well-chosen gift turns into a duplicate. For a heavy reader, go one layer down into a genre list; for an occasional reader, this page is ideal.

By catalog shelving data, Sunrise on the Reaping, Onyx Storm and Ward D led the year. That measures how many readers shelved each book rather than literary merit.
Why is the 2025 list more reliable than the 2026 one?
A completed year removes the publication-timing distortion. In a current year a January release has had eleven months to find readers and a November one has had none.
Will you delete this page when 2027 arrives?
No. Year lists are archives and keep their URL permanently, with a dated stamp and a link to the current year. People look them up for years afterwards.
Is a 2025 book still a good gift?
For an occasional reader, very much so — they almost certainly have not read it. For someone who reads constantly, these are the most likely books to already be on their shelf.
