The short version

2025 has a full year of shelving data behind it, so this list is more settled than the current-year one. Everything here is a 2025 release with a shape that suits listening: one strong voice, linear time, or an episodic structure.

How we picked

Same source as [the 2025 book list](/best-books/2025) — catalog shelving data for books first published in 2025 — then filtered for audio-friendly structure. We have not listened to these recordings and do not claim to have.

What we do on every list: read the publisher’s own description rather than a summary of it, check print length and first publication year against library catalog data (last refreshed September 8, 2026), confirm the book is still sold in the format we suggest, and write the match line before the blurb. What we do not do is claim to have read every book here cover to cover. The full method is published, and it is written so anyone can check it.

7. For a listener who wants difficulty

Katabasis

R. F. Kuang

Give this ifthey liked Babel and want more of it

Two rival graduate students descend into hell to retrieve their dead advisor. It is dense and it is carried by two strong voices, which is what makes a demanding book workable in audio.

One caveat: Dense and allusive. This is a book for an experienced listener with a quiet commute.

Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil

V. E. Schwab

Give this ifthey want atmosphere rather than jump scares

Three women across five centuries, bound by hunger. A three-voice structure is exactly the case where audio can outperform print, because the reader never has to work out who is speaking.

Why a completed year is more reliable

A current-year list is distorted by publication timing — a January release has had eleven months to find listeners and a November one has had none. After a full year that mostly washes out, which makes this list steadier than the 2026 one.

The underlying data is the same as our 2025 book list: how many public catalog users shelved each title, hand-edited to remove textbooks and duplicate editions. What this page adds is the filter for whether the book's shape suits being read aloud.

Match the length to their hours

The one variable that matters most in this format and gets checked least. A twenty-hour recording is a month of ordinary commuting; a five-hour one is a week. Enthusiasm rarely survives four weeks of stop-start listening, particularly across a fortnight where somebody drives less.

We show print length on every pick, which is a reliable proxy — and we explain on audiobooks under six hours why we do not print runtimes. For the exact figure, the retailer's listing shows it for the specific recording.

What we would skip

Alchemised, if the commute is short

It was one of the most-shelved books of 2025 and it is close to a thousand pages, which makes for an extremely long recording. That is a gift for someone with a two-hour daily drive and a quiet obligation for anyone else. Length is a feature or a problem depending entirely on the listener's hours, and it is worth checking before you buy.

Questions people ask

What were the best audiobooks of 2025?

By catalog shelving among audio-friendly releases, Sunrise on the Reaping, Ward D and Careless People led the year. We filter for structure rather than rating narrators.

Why is 2025 more reliable than 2026?

A completed year removes the publication-timing distortion, so the ranking reflects what people actually listened to rather than when it appeared.

How long should an audiobook be?

Match it to their hours. Twenty hours is a month of ordinary commuting; five is a week. Length is the variable that most often decides whether an audiobook gets finished.

Do you rate the narrators?

No. We have not listened to these recordings and will not imply otherwise. Play the sample — thirty seconds tells you more about narration than any review.
