We chose mysteries that start a series or stand alone, and sorted them from cozy to dark. Series openers matter more in audio, because a listener who likes the detective will want the next twenty hours with them. We have not listened to all eight.

Why mysteries suit listening
A classic mystery is built from interviews: suspects talking, a detective listening, and a reader trying to hear the lie. In audio that becomes literal, and a good narrator gives each suspect a voice you can tell apart.
Series matter more in audio than in print. A listener who likes a detective's company will happily spend a hundred hours with them, which is why the first book of a long series is the best gift in the genre.
