Read one story a night rather than treating a collection like a novel.

We chose collections rather than single famous stories, balanced the contemporary and the classic, and noted how much each one asks of a reader. Anthologies by many hands were left out, because a collection by one writer is where a reader actually finds a voice to follow. We have not read all eight.

Who short stories are actually for
Short stories suit two readers especially well: the one who never gets through a novel's first hundred pages, and the one who reads in fifteen-minute pieces before sleep. A story is a whole thing in a single sitting, which is exactly what a novel cannot offer.
They are also the cheapest way to try a writer. A collection shows you a voice eight or ten times over; if two of them land, the novels are worth your money.
How to read a collection
- One a night. The endings need room. Six in a row and they blur.
- Out of order is fine. Most collections are not sequenced as an argument.
- Abandon freely. A story you dislike costs twenty minutes, not a week.
- Reread the good one. Short fiction rewards a second pass more than novels do, because you can hold the whole shape in your head.

Reading a collection like a novel
The commonest way people bounce off short stories is reading six in a row, which flattens them into a blur of endings. A collection is designed for one story at a sitting, with a gap afterward. Read it over a month and it works; read it in a weekend and it will not.
