The trope only works when the argument is real. Here are eight where it is.

The short version
The trope lives or dies on whether the two people have a genuine reason to dislike each other. Manufactured hostility that evaporates on page 200 is the commonest failure; a real professional, class or moral conflict is what makes the turn satisfying.

Two executive assistants at a merged publisher wage a private war across facing desks. The conflict is a real one — their bosses are rivals and one of them will be promoted over the other — and the book never pretends otherwise. Closed door until it very much is not.

A brother's-best-friend romance built on real antagonism, and the entry point to a series that dominates ebook romance reading. Explicit throughout, and worth knowing that before it is unwrapped.

Why the trope works when it works
Romance has a known ending by convention, so none of the tension can come from wondering whether they get together. It all has to come from obstacle. Enemies-to-lovers is the most efficient obstacle available: it is generated by the characters themselves, it does not require a coincidence, and it is renewable — every scene can put it back.
Which is exactly why a fake obstacle collapses the book. If the antagonism is a misunderstanding, the reader spends the whole novel ahead of the characters, waiting for someone to say the obvious sentence. If it is a job, a family loyalty or a real difference in values, the reader has no idea how it resolves, and that is the whole pleasure.
Check the heat level before you buy
Contemporary romance runs from completely closed-door to very explicit, with no standard labeling and near-identical illustrated covers in the same three colors. It is the single most common way a romance gift goes wrong.
Every pick above states where it sits. If you are checking a book that is not on this page, the publisher's own description usually signals it — steamy and spicy mean explicit — and reader reviews say so directly, often in the first line. Thirty seconds of checking prevents a memorable afternoon.
Pride and Prejudice is the only entirely closed-door book here. Romance for beginners has more of them, including the strongest slow burn we know.

Anything where the hostility is a misunderstanding
The failure mode of this trope. If the two leads dislike each other because of something one of them overheard, the tension evaporates the moment somebody explains — and you can feel the book waiting to do that for two hundred pages. Real enemies-to-lovers needs a conflict that survives being talked about: a job one of them will lose, a family, a war, a genuine difference in values.
