Best Books to Give for an Anniversary
A wedding gift celebrates a beginning. An anniversary gift has to be about what happened next.
Updated October 2026 · By Sawyer V.

The short version
The Course of Love is the best single answer: a novel about everything that happens after the wedding, which is the subject an anniversary is actually marking. Crossing to Safety is the one for a long marriage, Our Souls at Night for a late one, and Devotions is the keepsake that suits any year.

How we picked
We looked for books about love that has already been tested rather than love that is starting, because that is what separates an anniversary gift from a wedding one. Then we checked each against the obvious risk: a book that reads as a comment on the recipients' marriage is a bad present however good it is. We have not read all six.
What we do on every list: read the publisher’s own description rather than a summary of it, check print length and first publication year against library catalog data (last refreshed October 7, 2026), confirm the book is still sold in the format we suggest, and write the match line before the blurb. What we do not do is claim to have read every book here cover to cover. The full method is published, and it is written so anyone can check it.

Six for a couple with years behind them
1. The best single answer
The Course of Love
Alain de Botton
Give this ifthey have been married long enough to find it funny
A novel that begins where romances end: a couple in Edinburgh marry, and the book follows the arguments about the dishwasher, the resentments nobody voices and the long work of being known. Short essays between the chapters say plainly what the scenes have just shown, which is why people press it on each other.
One caveat: It is unsentimental about marriage. For a couple in a bad year, this is the wrong gift.

2. The one for a long marriage
Crossing to Safety
Wallace Stegner
Give this ifthey have been together twenty years or more
Two couples meet as young academics in the 1930s and the novel follows them across decades of work, money, illness and thwarted ambition. It is about friendship and marriage surviving things rather than about romance, and it is the most quietly devastating book here.
One caveat: Illness and long disappointment. Beautiful, and not light.

3. The one for a late love
Our Souls at Night
Kent Haruf
Give this ifone or both of them started again later
Two widowed neighbors in a small Colorado town agree to sleep in the same bed, just for the company and the talking, and the town and their adult children have a great deal to say about it. Spare, warm and short enough to read in an evening together.

4. The one about a partnership
Just Kids
Patti Smith
Give this ifthey built something together
Two broke twenty-year-olds meet in New York in 1967 and spend years keeping each other working — one becomes a musician, the other a photographer. The best book there is about two people choosing each other's ambition, and a good gift for a couple who run a business or a household as a joint project.
One caveat: A friendship and a love affair rather than a marriage, and it ends with a death from AIDS.

5. The keepsake
Devotions
Mary Oliver
Give this ifyou want something they will keep by the bed
Fifty years of Mary Oliver's poems, selected by her, about attention, mornings, dogs and grief. Nobody has to read it in order or finish it, which is exactly what makes a poetry collection the most reliable gift on this list — and it can be inscribed on the first page.

6. The object
Pride and Prejudice
Jane Austen
Give this ifthe gift has to look like a gift
If one of them has a favorite novel, the anniversary version of this gift is not the story but the edition: a clothbound or illustrated copy of a book they already love, inscribed with the date. Austen is the most common case, and the hardback editions of it are genuinely beautiful.
One caveat: Check they do not already own the edition you are buying. This gift fails on duplication more than on taste.

An anniversary is not a wedding
The two occasions get the same books, and they should not. A wedding present is addressed to optimism: two people at the start, in front of everybody, being wished well. Nothing has been tested yet, so a hopeful book is the right one.
An anniversary is the opposite. Something has been tested — a year of it, or forty — and the gift is read in that light. A book about falling in love handed to a couple on their twentieth lands as a card does; a book about staying lands as somebody having noticed.
That is the whole filter on this page. Everything here is about love that has already happened: a marriage after the wedding, a friendship across decades, two people starting again in their seventies, a working partnership. The only exception is the keepsake edition, which is about the object rather than the subject.
By which anniversary it is
The year changes the gift more than the couple does. This is the rough mapping that holds up.
| Anniversary | What tends to land | Give |
|---|---|---|
| First | Something funny about the shock of living together | The Course of Love |
| Fifth to tenth | A novel they can read in the same week and argue about | Our Souls at Night |
| Tenth to twentieth | An object rather than a text — they have enough to read | A clothbound edition, inscribed |
| Twenty-fifth | A book about a marriage that lasted | Crossing to Safety |
| Fortieth and after | Something to dip into rather than finish | Devotions |
| Any year, for a couple who work together | The partnership rather than the romance | Just Kids |
If you are giving this to your own spouse
Then the inscription is the gift and the book is the container. A date, where you were, and one specific thing from the year you have both just had will outlast anything printed inside it, and it turns a twelve-dollar paperback into the thing kept in a drawer for thirty years.
The practical corollary: buy print. An ebook cannot be inscribed, wrapped or handed over, which is the whole mechanism here. If they read on a Kindle, buy the paper copy for the shelf anyway and let them read it however they like — print vs Kindle covers the trade-off in full.
Where this fits
Books to give as a wedding gift is the beginning-of-the-story version of this page, books for couples to read together is for shared reading rather than for an occasion, and books for Valentine's Day is the romance shelf. For a budget, the ladder runs from under $25 to the splurge list, where the beautiful editions are.
What we would skip
A book about how to fix a marriage
Relationship manuals are useful and they are not presents. Handed over on an anniversary, the most carefully chosen one reads as a complaint with a ribbon on it, and the recipient will remember the implication long after the advice. If a couple has asked for a recommendation of that kind, give it on any other day of the year. An anniversary gift should be about what they have already done, not about what you think they should do next.
Questions people ask
What book should I give for an anniversary?
The Course of Love for most couples: it is about everything that happens after the wedding, which is what an anniversary marks. Crossing to Safety for a long marriage, and Devotions if you want a keepsake rather than a story.
Is a book a good anniversary gift?
Yes, if it is inscribed. An uninscribed book is a recommendation; a dated inscription on the first page is the part the couple keeps, and it costs nothing.
What is a good first anniversary book gift?
The Course of Love. The first year is the one where living together turns out to be the actual subject, and this is the funniest honest book about it.
What should I give for a 25th anniversary?
Crossing to Safety, or a clothbound edition of a novel one of them already loves. By twenty-five years the object usually matters more than the text.
Should I buy one copy or two for a couple?
One, except for poetry. A single book passed between them is a shared gift; two copies are two presents that happen to match.
