Best Books to Give at a Baby Shower
You are buying an object that a tired adult will read aloud four hundred times. Choose accordingly.

Buy for the adult doing the reading as much as for the baby. The books that survive have rhythm, are pleasant to say aloud, and have a blank page at the front to inscribe — which is what turns a common book into this child's copy.

How we picked
We selected on read-aloud durability: rhythm, brevity and no moral stapled to the last page. All six are widely available in board-book or hardback form, which is what a baby-shower gift needs to be. We have not read all six four hundred times, though a couple come close.
What we do on every list: read the publisher’s own description rather than a summary of it, check print length and first publication year against library catalog data (last refreshed September 8, 2026), confirm the book is still sold in the format we suggest, and write the match line before the blurb. Give this ifthe guests are being asked to write in a book instead of a card
A parent imagines who the child might become, in rhyme, with a dedication page built for exactly this. If the shower has a book-instead-of-cards tradition, this is the one designed around it.
One caveat: Given without any writing in it, it is fairly generic. The signatures are the gift.

Buy for the four hundredth reading
A picture book given at a shower will be read out loud hundreds of times by an exhausted adult. That is the actual specification, and almost everything enduring in the category meets it the same way.
- It scans. A book that is pleasant to say gets chosen off the shelf more often, which is most of why a child ends up loving it.
- It is short. Four to eight minutes. At the end of a long day, length is not generosity.
- It has no moral in the last spread. Children can tell when a book is trying to improve them, and they stop asking for it.
- It is physically robust. Board book for under two; hardback for anything meant to last.
Write in it, and date it
Every copy of Goodnight Moon is identical until somebody writes in the front of it. Then it is this child's copy, and it is the one that gets kept when the rest of the shelf is passed on.
Write the date, your name, and one line to the child rather than to the parents. It will be read by a seven-year-old at some point, which is a better audience to write for than the person unwrapping it.

A parenting manual
A book about sleep training, feeding or gentle discipline is a gift to a person who is about to be flooded with contradictory advice from everyone they meet. Unrequested, it reads as an opinion about how they should do it before they have started. If they asked for a specific title, buy that one. Otherwise buy something for the baby and let them find their own method.

What book should I give at a baby shower?
A board book or hardback picture book with rhythm, kept short, and inscribed. Goodnight Moon and The Very Hungry Caterpillar are the two standards and duplicates are genuinely useful.
Is it bad to give the same book someone else gave?
No. Board books get destroyed, and a second copy of a bedtime standard is used rather than returned. The inscription makes yours distinguishable anyway.
Should I give a parenting book?
Only if they asked for a specific title. Unrequested, it reads as an opinion about how they should parent before they have had a chance to start.
What if the shower asks for books instead of cards?
Then the writing is the gift. Pick something with a generous blank page at the front, write to the child rather than the parents, and date it.
