Sorted by how much you actually know about what he reads, which is usually less than you would admit.

Start from what you actually know. If you know his taste, buy into it. If you do not — which is the usual case with a sibling — buy momentum: a true story with a clock on it, or a novel about a competent person solving a hard problem.

How we picked
We grouped by how much information you have rather than by genre, because with a sibling the honest constraint is usually that you have not discussed books since you lived in the same house. Everything here is standalone and under 500 pages. We have not read all eight.
What we do on every list: read the publisher’s own description rather than a summary of it, check print length and first publication year against library catalog data (last refreshed September 10, 2026), confirm the book is still sold in the format we suggest, and write the match line before the blurb. What we do not do is claim to have read every book here cover to cover. The full method is published, and it is written so anyone can check it.

A man wakes on a spacecraft with no memory, two dead crewmates and a problem that ends the solar system if he cannot solve it. It converts reluctant readers at a higher rate than anything else in print, and it needs no relationship with the genre at all.
One caveat: If he already reads science fiction he has almost certainly read it.

The Only Good Indians

Give this ifhe reads horror and you have discussed it
Four Blackfeet men are hunted by something following an elk hunt they should not have taken. Genuinely frightening and genuinely about something, and the right gift only if you already know this is his shelf.
One caveat: Violent. Not a guess.

The sibling problem
You have known him longer than almost anyone and you probably have no idea what he reads, because the last time you shared a house you were both children and neither of you has volunteered a reading update since.
That is normal and it is worth being honest about rather than guessing from a childhood impression. What he liked at fifteen is not evidence. The two things that are evidence: what he watches, and what he does with his weekends. Somebody who watched a whole documentary series will take narrative nonfiction; somebody who spends Saturdays outdoors will take a survival account.
If he genuinely does not read
Consider that the format is the problem rather than the appetite. Plenty of people who never open a book drive an hour a day, walk a dog, or work with their hands — all situations where a printed book is impossible and audio is perfect.
That is not a consolation prize, it is the correct format for his hours. Books for someone who does not like reading goes further into the conversion problem, and the subscription block above is the fastest route if he drives.

For fast readers who browse
It pays off from about three ebooks a month, in the genres the catalog covers well — romance, romantasy, cozy mystery, thriller, progression fantasy. It does not pay off if you are waiting on a specific new hardcover, because those are usually not included. Everything is borrowed, not owned.

What we would skip
A book about becoming a better man
Discipline, habits, stoicism, cold showers. Given between brothers this reads as a comment however it was meant, and it is the single most common misfire in this category — the recipient hears an opinion about how he is living rather than a present. If he wants that book he will buy it. Give him something that is purely for enjoying.
Questions people ask
What book should I buy my brother?
If you cannot name a book he has read, buy momentum: Project Hail Mary or Dark Matter. If you know he likes true stories, The Wager is the most reliable nonfiction gift in print.
He says he does not read. What now?
Check whether the format is the problem. If he drives, walks a dog or works with his hands, an audiobook fits hours a printed book never could.
Should I give him a self-improvement book?
No, unless he asked by name. Between brothers it reads as an opinion about how he is living, which is the opposite of a gift.
What if we have completely different taste?
Buy for his taste, not yours. A gift book is furniture in somebody else's life for three weeks — love your own favorite privately and put the reason in the inscription instead.
