How to Give a Kindle Book as a Gift

It takes about forty seconds, it arrives instantly, and it is the wrong gift more often than people think.

Updated October 2026 · By Sawyer V.

The short version

You can. On the Kindle edition's page, choose Give as a Gift, enter the recipient's email and a delivery date, and they get a link to claim it. They can exchange it for Amazon credit if they already own it, which is the feature that makes this safe to do.

Some links on this page are affiliate links. If you buy through one we earn a commission at no extra cost to you, and it does not change which books are here or the order they appear in. Read the full disclosure.

How we picked

The picks are the four cases where a digital gift genuinely beats a parcel — weight, series, privacy and timing. They illustrate the decision rather than rank anything, and we have not read all four.

What we do on every list: read the publisher’s own description rather than a summary of it, check print length and first publication year against library catalog data (last refreshed October 7, 2026), confirm the book is still sold in the format we suggest, and write the match line before the blurb. What we do not do is claim to have read every book here cover to cover. The full method is published, and it is written so anyone can check it.

How to do it

  1. Open the Kindle edition's page, not the hardback's. The gift button only appears on the ebook, and the format selector at the top of the page is what switches between them.
  2. Choose Give as a Gift. It sits under the buy buttons on the right.
  3. Enter the recipient's email address — the one they use for Amazon if you know it, any address if you do not. They do not need an existing Kindle account; a free one is enough to read on any phone.
  4. Pick the delivery date. Today, or any date up to a year ahead. Schedule it for the morning of the occasion rather than the night before.
  5. Add a message, then buy. You can also choose to be sent the claim link yourself to forward or print, which is the version to use if the gift is being handed over in person.

The whole thing takes under a minute, and the single most common mistake is step one: buying from the print page and ending up with a paperback on its way to your own address.

A thirteen-hundred-page nineteenth-century revenge novel is a brick, and a brick is a bad thing to hold above your face at midnight. Some books are genuinely better as a file, and the longest classics are the clearest examples.

Give this ifthey finish books in two days

A war college where cadets bond with dragons, and the reason to give this one digitally is what happens next: a reader who finishes it at one in the morning can start the sequel at one minute past, which a parcel cannot offer.

One caveat: Explicit content. Know your recipient.

Nobody wants a self-improvement book unwrapped in front of their family, however much they wanted the book. Anything about habits, money, health or grief is kinder as a quiet delivery to an inbox than as an object passed across a room.

Give this ifyou have left it until the actual day

A woman between life and death gets to try the lives she did not choose. A widely loved, widely gifted novel, and the honest reason to send it as a file is that it arrives on the date you choose even if you remembered at ten at night.

One caveat: Suicide is the opening premise. Not a gift for everybody.

Digital or paper, for a gift

Four questions settle it, and they are about the occasion rather than the reader.

  • Will it be opened in front of people? Then it needs to be an object.
  • Is the subject private? Then it should not be.
  • Is it enormous, or the start of a series? Digital wins on both.
  • Do you want it to still be in their house in 2040? Paper, inscribed, with the date.

The strongest version of this gift is often both: the paper copy to hand over, and the ebook sent the same morning so they can start it on the train home. For the audio equivalent of this page, see how to give an audiobook as a gift.

Where this fits

Print vs Kindle and ebooks vs print go through the format trade-offs in full, and can you print a Kindle book answers the question people ask after they have bought the wrong one.

For what to actually send, books to give as gifts is the general list and how to choose a book as a gift is the method behind it.

Two ways to read this list for less

If several books here appeal, a subscription usually beats buying them one at a time — but only for the right kind of reader. Here is who each one actually suits.

Audible Premium Plus

For anyone whose hands are busy

Driving, walking, cooking, cleaning. It converts hours that were never available for reading, which is a bigger effect than any discount. Books bought with a credit stay yours after you cancel — titles from the included catalog do not, and confusing the two is the most common complaint about the service.

Kindle Unlimited

For fast readers who browse

It pays off from about three ebooks a month, in the genres the catalog covers well — romance, romantasy, cozy mystery, thriller, progression fantasy. It does not pay off if you are waiting on a specific new hardcover, because those are usually not included. Everything is borrowed, not owned.

See Kindle Unlimited terms and pricing

Is Kindle Unlimited worth it? — the arithmetic, done on your own reading.

#ad — how we are funded. We print no subscription prices anywhere on this site, because they change and a stale figure sends you to a checkout expecting something that is not there. And if you read in silence in a chair, neither of these is for you — buy the book, or borrow it from your library.

What we would skip

A Kindle book as the only present

An ebook gift is a notification. There is nothing to unwrap, nothing to inscribe, nothing on a shelf in ten years and nothing to hand to somebody else afterwards — and those are most of the reasons a book works as a present at all. It is an excellent way to send somebody a specific book they want right now, and a thin way to mark an occasion. If there is a ribbon involved, buy the paper edition; if the point is that they get to read it tonight, send the file and say so.

Questions people ask

Can you gift a Kindle book?

Yes. On the Kindle edition's page, choose Give as a Gift, enter the recipient's email and a delivery date, and they receive a link to claim it.

What happens if they already own the book?

They can exchange the gift for Amazon credit instead of claiming it. You will not be told, and nothing is wasted.

Does the recipient need a Kindle?

No. The free Kindle app reads the book on any phone, tablet, computer or browser.

Why is there no Give as a Gift button?

Almost always because you are looking at the print or audio edition. Switch to the Kindle edition. A few publishers do not enable gifting at all, in which case a gift card is the way round it.

Can I gift a Kindle Unlimited book?

No. A Kindle Unlimited title is borrowed rather than owned, and a borrow cannot be given. The same book can still be bought and gifted normally.

Can I send a Kindle gift to someone in another country?

Not from your own store. Buy it from the recipient's country's Amazon store, or send a gift card they can spend there.
