Kindle Unlimited vs Libby
One costs money and never makes you wait. The other is free and sometimes does. Heavy readers often use both.

Libby lends ebooks and audiobooks free through your public library, including many big new releases, but popular titles have waitlists. Kindle Unlimited costs a monthly fee and has no waiting, but its catalog leans toward genre and self-published fiction. Use Libby for specific books you want; use Kindle Unlimited for browsing a lot of genre fiction.

This page compares two ways of borrowing rather than books, so the picks illustrate which kind of title suits which service. None is a claim about current availability: library holdings vary by system, and the Kindle Unlimited catalog rotates. We have not read all four.
What we do on every list: read the publisher’s own description rather than a summary of it, check print length and first publication year against library catalog data (last refreshed September 11, 2026), confirm the book is still sold in the format we suggest, and write the match line before the blurb. What we do not do is claim to have read every book here cover to cover. The full method is published, and it is written so anyone can check it.
How each one works
Libby is the app most US public libraries use to lend ebooks and audiobooks. You sign in with a library card, borrow for a set loan period, and join a waitlist when all of the library's copies are out. In the US, many libraries also let you send Libby ebooks to a Kindle.
Kindle Unlimited is Amazon's paid ebook subscription. You borrow from its catalog with no waitlist and read on a Kindle or in the Kindle app. The catalog is large and particularly deep in romance, thrillers, fantasy and other genre fiction, much of it self-published.

Why heavy readers use both
The two are complementary more than competitive. Libby covers the specific books you have heard about — new releases, prize-winners, book-club picks — at the cost of waiting. Kindle Unlimited covers the gaps in between with a deep supply of genre fiction and no waiting at all.
A sensible pattern is to keep a few library holds running and read from Kindle Unlimited while you wait. If you only read a book or two a month, the library alone is usually enough, and Prime Reading is worth checking if you already have Prime.

- You read specific books you have heard about: Libby first.
- You read three or more genre ebooks a month: Kindle Unlimited — is Kindle Unlimited worth it has the arithmetic.
- You mostly listen: Libby for free audiobooks, or Audible if waitlists are the problem.
- You are on a tight budget: Libby, without question.

Driving, walking, cooking, cleaning. It converts hours that were never available for reading, which is a bigger effect than any discount. Books bought with a credit stay yours after you cancel — titles from the included catalog do not, and confusing the two is the most common complaint about the service.

For fast readers who browse
It pays off from about three ebooks a month, in the genres the catalog covers well — romance, romantasy, cozy mystery, thriller, progression fantasy. It does not pay off if you are waiting on a specific new hardcover, because those are usually not included. Everything is borrowed, not owned.

Subscribing to Kindle Unlimited for one new bestseller
The most common disappointment: someone subscribes for a specific new release and finds it is not included. Big new books from major publishers are usually in libraries and usually not in Kindle Unlimited. For one specific title, place a library hold or buy it.

Is Libby better than Kindle Unlimited?
For specific new books, usually yes, and it is free. For reading a lot of genre fiction without waiting, Kindle Unlimited is better. Many heavy readers use both.
Can I read Libby books on a Kindle?
In the US, many libraries let you send Libby ebooks to a Kindle. Look for the option when you borrow.
Does Kindle Unlimited have new releases?
Rarely from major publishers. Its catalog is strongest in genre and self-published fiction.
Is Libby really free?
Yes. You need a card from a participating public library, and the library pays for the licenses.
