Short fantasy is a real and growing shelf, not a compromise. Every book here has a print length verified against library catalog data rather than estimated, and several of them are among the most acclaimed work the genre has produced.

How we picked

The filter was mechanical: median print length under about 300 pages, taken from Open Library's catalog data rather than from memory. Editions vary, so a specific printing may run slightly longer or shorter — the figure shown on each pick is the median across editions. We have not read all seven.

What we do on every list: read the publisher’s own description rather than a summary of it, check print length and first publication year against library catalog data (last refreshed September 8, 2026), confirm the book is still sold in the format we suggest, and write the match line before the blurb. What we do not do is claim to have read every book here cover to cover. The full method is published, and it is written so anyone can check it.

Two sisters live alone with an uncle after most of their family died at dinner. Not marketed as fantasy, but the atmosphere belongs to it, and at under 150 pages it is one of the most efficient novels in print.

About these page counts

Every length on this page comes from Open Library's catalog data, which reports a median across the editions it holds, and each pick shows its figure. We do not estimate page counts, because an estimate on a page whose entire premise is length would be worse than useless.

Two caveats worth knowing. A specific printing can differ from the median by fifty pages or more, depending on type size and paper. And a large-print edition of a 250-page book will be considerably longer, which matters if you are buying one for an older reader.

Why short fantasy is growing

For thirty years the commercial logic of the genre pushed toward length: fat books signal value on a shelf, and a series sells better than a standalone. That has visibly shifted. Novellas now win the genre's major awards, cozy fantasy is a mainstream category, and several of the most acclaimed fantasy books of the last five years are under 300 pages.

For a gift buyer this is straightforwardly good news. A short fantasy novel is the easiest thing to give: no series commitment, no prior reading, and a real chance it gets finished. Fantasy for beginners overlaps heavily with this list for exactly that reason.

What we would skip

An abridged edition of a long fantasy novel

Abridgements of epic fantasy exist and they are a poor answer to this problem. The length is doing something in those books — the accumulation is the pleasure — so cutting it produces a shorter book that is worse rather than a good short book. Read something written short instead.

Questions people ask

Are there good fantasy books under 300 pages?

Yes, and several are among the genre's most acclaimed recent work. Piranesi won the Women's Prize at under 250 pages; A Psalm for the Wild-Built runs to about 160.

How do you know the page counts are right?

They come from Open Library's catalog data, which reports a median across editions, and we show the figure on each pick. A specific printing can differ by fifty pages depending on type size and paper.

Is a novella worth the same as a novel?

For a reader, often more — the Murderbot novellas and Piranesi are both frequently named as favorites over much longer books. For a gift, a short book is also far more likely to be finished.

What is the shortest good fantasy book?

We Have Always Lived in the Castle and All Systems Red are both around 150 pages, and both are complete rather than abridged. Either can be read in an evening.
