Five legitimate routes, two of them permanent. Also the honest reason the free bestseller you are looking for is not free.

The short version
Everything out of copyright is free as an ebook, permanently, from Amazon's classics and from Project Gutenberg — that is thousands of genuinely great books. Your library lends current ebooks free through Libby, and in most US systems will send them to a Kindle. Prime includes a rotating Prime Reading catalog and one early-release First Reads pick a month. The new bestseller you actually want is almost never free, and the sites claiming otherwise are pirating it.

How we picked
Every pick here is genuinely free as an ebook because its copyright has expired — not free on a trial, not free this week. We checked that each is a book worth reading rather than merely available, and we say what the paid editions add. We have not read all five.
What we do on every list: read the publisher’s own description rather than a summary of it, check print length and first publication year against library catalog data (last refreshed September 24, 2026), confirm the book is still sold in the format we suggest, and write the match line before the blurb. What we do not do is claim to have read every book here cover to cover. The full method is published, and it is written so anyone can check it.
The five routes, and what each one gets you
- Public-domain classics. Anything out of copyright is free as an ebook, forever, with no account or trial. Amazon lists thousands of them, and Project Gutenberg has tens of thousands. This is the biggest free shelf by an enormous margin.
- Your library, delivered to a Kindle. Libby lends current ebooks free with a library card, and in most US systems you can send the loan to a Kindle rather than reading it in the app. Popular titles have holds; unpopular good ones often do not.
- Prime Reading. A rotating catalog included with an existing Prime membership. Small next to Kindle Unlimited, and you are already paying for it.
- Amazon First Reads. Prime members choose one early-release ebook a month at no extra cost. The quality varies; the price does not.
- Promotions and free first-in-series. Independent authors give away opening volumes to sell the rest. Genuinely free, genuinely legal, and a good way to find a new series cheaply.
Two of those five are permanent and free to anyone. The other three depend on a library card or a Prime membership you may already have.

Two families destroying each other across two generations on the Yorkshire moors, narrated by people who understand none of it. Nastier than its reputation, and nothing like a romance.
One caveat: Cruelty to people and animals throughout. It is not a comfort read.

How to tell whether a book is free
The short version: if the author died a long time ago, the book is probably free. US copyright terms are more complicated than that, but as a practical rule, most things published before the 1930s are now out of copyright, and everything on the Project Gutenberg catalog has been checked.
One wrinkle worth knowing: a translation or an annotated edition can be in copyright even when the original is not. Modern translations of Tolstoy or Homer are new work and are priced accordingly, so the free edition of a translated classic may be a hundred-year-old translation. For some books that is fine; for others the modern translation is worth paying for, and it is usually the difference between finishing and not.
When the paid edition is worth it anyway
A free public-domain ebook is the same text, and sometimes that is all you want. The paid editions sell three things the free files do not have: a modern translation, real annotation, and a physical object.
So the honest advice is mixed. Read the free file first to find out whether you like the book. If it turns out to be one you will return to, buy the edition with the introduction and the notes — for a nineteenth-century novel that context is often the difference between admiring a book and understanding it.

If several books here appeal, a subscription usually beats buying them one at a time — but only for the right kind of reader. Here is who each one actually suits.
Audible Premium Plus
For anyone whose hands are busy
Driving, walking, cooking, cleaning. It converts hours that were never available for reading, which is a bigger effect than any discount. Books bought with a credit stay yours after you cancel — titles from the included catalog do not, and confusing the two is the most common complaint about the service.

Kindle Unlimited
For fast readers who browse
It pays off from about three ebooks a month, in the genres the catalog covers well — romance, romantasy, cozy mystery, thriller, progression fantasy. It does not pay off if you are waiting on a specific new hardcover, because those are usually not included. Everything is borrowed, not owned.

What we would skip
Any site offering current bestsellers as free downloads
If a site has this year's prize winners and the big thriller everyone is reading, all free, it is distributing stolen files. That is a legal problem for you and an income problem for the writer, and those sites are also a reliable source of malware. There is no clever loophole here. The legitimate free shelf is enormous, and it is made of books whose copyright has genuinely expired.
Questions people ask
How do I get free Kindle books legally?
Read out-of-copyright classics, which are free permanently, and borrow current titles from your library through Libby, which can deliver to a Kindle in most US systems.
Are Amazon's free classics the same books as Project Gutenberg's?
Largely yes — both are out-of-copyright texts. Gutenberg has a far bigger catalog; Amazon's versions are easier to send to a Kindle.
Is Prime Reading free?
It is included with Prime rather than free, and it is a much smaller rotating catalog than Kindle Unlimited.
Why are new releases never free?
Because they are in copyright and someone is being paid for them. Any site offering them free is distributing pirated files.
