Michael Connelly Books in Order

Connelly has written five series set in one Los Angeles, and characters cross between them constantly. That makes the first book a real decision rather than a formality, because it sets which thread you are following.

Mickey Haller is a defense attorney and Bosch's half-brother, which is how the legal books and the police books became one story. Renée Ballard works the night shift and then the cold case unit. Jack McEvoy is a reporter. The Catalina books are the newest thing Connelly is doing.

Blood Work introduces Terry McCaleb, a retired FBI profiler, who then turns up in the Bosch novel A Darkness More Than Night. That is the pattern across all of it: a standalone is rarely as standalone as it looks.

This is the single most confusing thing about Connelly's bibliography, and it is why reading-order lists disagree with each other. Five novels appear in both the Bosch list and the Ballard list, because both detectives lead them.

• Dark Sacred Night (2018) — Bosch 21 and Ballard 2.
• The Night Fire (2019) — Bosch 22 and Ballard 3.
• The Dark Hours (2021) — Bosch 23 and Ballard 4.
• Desert Star (2022) — Bosch 24 and Ballard 5.
• The Waiting (2024) — Bosch 25 and Ballard 6.

So a reader following Bosch through publication order is already reading the Ballard series without doing anything, apart from The Late Show, which is Ballard alone and comes first. If you want her thread from the start, read The Late Show before Dark Sacred Night and then carry on as normal.

The Haller books overlap too, less tidily: Bosch appears in several of them, most substantially in Resurrection Walk, where he works as Haller's investigator. None of that requires reading the legal books to follow the police books, or the reverse.

Publication order is the default and the right answer for almost everyone. Two exceptions are worth knowing, because pretending otherwise sends people back to book one out of duty and they stop.

• Start in the middle if that is the only way you will start. City of Bones works cold. So does The Lincoln Lawyer. A reader who enjoys one of those will go back for the early books happily, and a reader forced to begin in 1992 sometimes never gets going at all.
• Skip a book you are not enjoying. These are cases, not chapters. Nothing in book fourteen will be incomprehensible because you put down book eleven.

One more thing worth saying plainly: the television adaptations are not the books, and they reorder cases, merge characters and change endings. Watching them first spoils some of the novels and misrepresents others. If you have seen a series and want the source, start from the beginning of the relevant thread rather than at the book the season borrowed its title from.

For a long series like this one, format matters more than usual.
